Throughout our research into our house and old buildings in general we have come across a number of really useful sites, books and organisations. This page contains links to the websites for these information sources and details of books that we have found useful.

Web Sites / Organisations

  • SPAB - The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. The SPAB was established in 1877 to protect buildings from the exuberant and damaging restoration being practiced by Victorian Architects. It provides a wealth of useful information for owners of old buildings and those working with old buildings. There are a huge range of pamphlets available and the SPAB also runs courses for home owners and professionals.
  • The Lime Centre - The Lime Centre is based just outside Winchester. It specialises in providing training courses and information for people who want to work with the lime renders and mortars that were used in the construction of old buildings.
  • Old House Store - The Old House Store is an online shop products required by people with old houses. It provides a full range of lime products, polishes, cast-iron work and building materials not available in your local branch of B&Q!
  • Mike Wye - Mike Wye is a leading supplier of tradtional building materials. They provide a full range of lime products and other building conservation related items.
  • Period Property - An excellent site containing information and a discussion forum for people interested in period buildings.
  • Building Conservation - Lots of useful information for people interested in building conservation work.
  • Images of England - A National Heritage website project to create an on-line, searchable, image database of all 375,000 listed buildings in England. I'm a photographer for this project so I have a very specific interest in it.
