Master Bedroom

The master bedroom is the other original bedroom that faces onto Church Lane. It is a very large room and has a wealth of exposed timber frame and a lovely high ceiling. We have just completed touching up the existing decorations so that this room is useable until we get time to come back and revisit it fully.

The room has lovely old lead casement windows facing Church Lane and some slightly more modern (but still old) windows facing onto the parking area. The windows need some repair which we will be undertaking in the near future.

When we purchased the house, this room had a modern built-in wardrobe feature at one end. This looked terrible and was built with modern and inappropriate materials. The first thing we did was remove this in order to restore the room back to its original appearance.

Our next task was to remove the carpet and underlay to expose the old oak floorboards underneath. A small area of softwood boards was replaced with new oak and the oak boards polished with traditional beeswax polish. We are leaving these boards exposed and are planning to purchase a large rug for the centre of the room.

We have also replaced the modern plastic lighting in the room with more appropriate period lighting.

There were a couple of panels in this room which were damp and causing the modern plaster to fall off. We stripped these back to their original brick material and then replastered using lime and animal hair. The new plaster was then painted with lime wash. The damp problems have now dissapeared.

This room is in a habitable state and we are now looking for furniture to complement the room. At some point in the future we will probably revisit this room, remove the Artex from the ceiling and the woodchip wall paper. We will then replace modern materials with lime and paint with lime wash.
